Anyone who dreams of becoming an FBI agent has to be realistic about one thing: it isn’t easy. This is something James Feldkamp knows like no other. There are many hurdles and obstacles placed in the way of aspiring FBI agents, because only the best of the best will do. One of those hurdles is the physical fitness test (PFT).

James Feldkamp on the PFT

The FBI PFT is one of the hardest and toughest physical test in the entire world of law enforcement. Around 50% of people fail the test when they first take it. Anyone who is out of shape or overweight shouldn’t even attempt it. In fact, the FBI is unlikely to accept you into the training. That is because, when you start your application process, you face another hurdle, which is making a good first impression. Show up overweight and your first impression will be ruined. They say that you never get a second chance to make that first impression, so it is best to wait and get in shape before even trying. Because the FBI remembers!

Now, if you are physically fit and you believe you have got what it takes, then it is ready to start preparing yourself. One of the best ways to do that is by taking part in interval training. There are a few reasons for that. Firstly, interval training is the best way to build up your physical condition and stamina. Secondly, the PFT itself is a form of interval training. If you make it through to that stage, you will first have to demonstrate your aerobic power by completing a 1.5 mile run. After that, your anaerobic power will be tested by completing a 300 meter sprint. Finally, your overall strength will be tested by completing sit ups and push ups. If you take part in interval training, and particularly high intensity interval training, you should find that you may be able to complete the PFT.

Joining the FBI is about a lot more than passing the PFT, of course. However, this is a starting point and one that is of tremendous importance. Fail the PFT and you won’t be able to go through the next stages either. And if you fail the PFT, you may be too disheartened to ever try again – if they let you at all. Hence, it is better to put your all into building your physical condition so that, if you do decide to go for it, you will be able to pass as well.

According to James Feldkamp, being part of the FBI is an amazing career that you will be able to enjoy for the rest of your life. However, joining the best of the best and the most elite law enforcement team in the country, if not the world, means proving yourself on many different levels. This starts with the physical level, with the PFT. Pass that, and you will be half way there.
