I've been making little pincushions for gift giving through the year. I'm linking up with Christmas Through The Year HERE. One of the reasons I've decided to make some pincushions is the simple fact that we have a huge box of crushed walnut shells that my DH thought he would use to sand blast his jalopy. As it turns out black diamond sand works better for his project and he ask me, "Do you have anything you could use crushed walnut shells for?" I used stuffing in the Cathedral Stars though.Recognize that little house? I paper pieced a few of them weeks ago. I've decided that I made plenty and now will use them for this project. "My home to yours" sort of gift.
The spool pincushion is a free pattern from Laundry Basket Quilts that you can find HERE.
The star below is a leftover block I had laying around from another project. When I saw the pincushion at Merumo's blog I just had to make it.
This one bothered me because it didn't have that aged look. The background shirting was just to "white" for me and now I know why it didn't make the cut into the quilt it was intended for. The pincushion was already made and stuffed with shells so I couldn't exactly tea dye it. So here is how I "age" alot of my projects. Wow...what a difference!

Great job and great idea for the antiquing. I think I have a couple of little orphan blocks down in the sewing room. Is one destined to become a pincushion? Hmmm.....
The house pinkeep is my favorite! And what a good way to antique your blocks. I have some distressing spray I use but I think the antiquing medium like you use might be better for some projects.

Those pincushions are a wonderful idea. They are each adorable in their own way. Your aging technique me think of when I was a waitress at a private fly-fishermen's club on the Snake River in Idaho in my college days. The chef would brush beet juice on the slices of roast to make it look more rare when the guests dawdled coming to dinner from their happy hour. She said they would be too sozzled to taste the difference anyway. Don't know why that came to mind. : )

I am smitten with your pincushions and would be hard-pressed to choose a favorite. I have sewn without a pincusion for years and suddenly I can't get enough of them. I love how you aged that last pincushion - clever!

You're not going to believe it...I made a pin cushion this month too lol! for the same event. I have to go get that spool pattern! I have used a wetted teabag to dab stain items that I didn't want to get completely wet...it works too. Glad you stained yours...it does look so much better :)
