New Book!, Gifts, and GO!

Dawn at Linen Closet Quilts sent a copy of her newly released book called, "Cottage Charm." It is a beautiful book filled with both quilt and cross-stitch projects.

I'm sorry that the photos turned but here I try to show you a little glimpse into details of what you would find inside her book. There is a framed stitchery piece called, "Fresh Cut Tulips" that brings me immediately back to my days of living in The Netherlands. Do you see the applique rabbit above? OMG!! Dawn's quilt design called, "In My Garden" is absolutely darling! Rose of Sharon applique pieces, rabbits, carrots and a scalloped border!!

Two gifts of friendship from my fellow blogging buddies Darlene at Quilting Daze and Shelley of Red Quilts.
Darlene made the sweetest little scissor fob and Shelley sent a tin with wonderful 2.5" strips and her hubby made the thread minder. I keep saying my mailbox is a wonderful place to be and above is a good sampling of why. Thank you so much!
Shelley is having a 100 post giveaway that started today! You do not want to miss it! I want the wool pincushion for myself but she has other fun things too!

The big brown truck showed up today with dies that I won from both Sew Cindy and Tonya's Sewing Room. What you see is Double Wedding Ring, Robbing Peter/Pay Paul, Hexagons and Rose of Sharon. Guess what I just realized?!!!! Call me slow....Rose of Sharon and Dawn's "In My Garden!" (so glad I requested that die!!)
I found many of you read my post about Accuquilt looking for bloggers where I gave you the link to send them your blog for consideration for the GO! I've been hearing back from many of you that you need at least 100 followers and this has sent a frenzy through blogland of everybody wanting followers. I initially helped the first person who told me this and after posting for her I received numerous request of needing followers. Becoming a follower used to be something special I thought. Am I wrong? In the beginning I fell in love with a blog and decided I had to follow them as I didn't want to miss a single post. Then there are the giveaway post requesting you become a follower to be entered (the bribe post). I guess what I am saying is the follower thing doesn't mean squat to me anymore. The only thing that matters to me is when you have the time to leave a comment on my blog post to say you have visited me this is what means most! Followers shouldn't be a popularity contest should it? I do realize that many of my blog friends are requesting followers for the GO! and gosh I can't blame them. SO for that reason only I am requesting that every blog you visit...become a follower!

Love the new dies you lucky gal!

Regarding followers, I agree, the whole follower thing does feel like I've been pulled into a popularity contest. I shouldn't have to ask for more followers to be able to give away a GO! but I have. I've asked for help from others and hated having to do it.

I can understand what AccuQuilt thinking. They believe the more followers, more the word gets out. What I think is not being taken into consideration is the fact that there are many of us that have followers that follow anonymously so they wouldn't show up in a count. And truth be told, when there's a giveaway somewhere in blogland people show up from everywhere whether they're your follower or not so why worry about it.

Such is life I guess...sorry for my little soap box moment.

A woman after my own heart. I too don't think it means much anymore to be a follower and that's why I didn't request that any come my way to get enough to try and win a Go. I don't play those kind of games with my blogs. If you want to come and see me, just come...no strings attached! Thanks for being a good friend. I truly hope someone you know wins a Go though. I'm just waiting for my hand to heal and get the stitches out the ER put in a week ago, and then I can start some sewing projects that have been put off while I tended my grandbabies for my daughter full-time and worked full-time all summer! I almost don't know what to do with the free time now, lol!

Mary, it was so sweet of you to post about me! Thanks!

I agree with you about the followers, it seems very empty now, especially when giveaways require it and then how many really go back there after? I have to wonder how many are "real"

How lucky for me! I am enrolled in a hand appliqué class with Dawn Heese at our LYS.
She's a very capable teacher and loves her hand appliqué.
Also, she's a very busy gal.

p.s. I still want a GO! :*)

I am one who feels totally blessed by the receipt "followers" surge for a GO opportunity ... however, feeling as many do, I don't become a follower unless I truly like a blog, even if it means winning something. I enjoy following those I'm interested in. I'm hosting a giveaway on my blog today as a "thank you" for all of the support I received, but in no way as incentive to follow me. I am enjoying the friendships I'm making in this area and no way want to infringe on my friends here, just as I wouldn't in face--to-face daily life. Bless the hearts of every sincere blogging friend ... for them I am grateful!

Tonya said...

love all them dies...agreed on the followers, you'll learn who your "real" followers are by their comments every time you post, or most every time.

Lisa M. said...

I was thinking the exact same thing about followers today. I would rather have a few who want to read my posts rather than many who play "I will if you will".

WoolenSails said...

You are going to up to your neck in cut fabrics, lol.
With the costs of dies, it is so nice that you could get ones for your new go and enjoy it more.

I agree, I follow because I love reading your posts and seeing your beautiful work.

Mary, I agree with you completely about being a follower. I used to only follow blogs that I loved and visited every single day. Hence, it was special for me to follow a blog. Then came the dreaded (to quote your perfect description) 'bribe posts' and becoming a follow just became a thing you did everywhere. I have to tell you though that even though I appreciate so much what Accuquilt is trying to do in flooding blogland with GOs and giveaways, I don't think being a follower should be a requirment. I recently got really tired of having a list of blogs I followed that was so long I couldn't remember who half of them were so I went through and spent time to clean out those that were 'bribe post' follows. Well, that was a couple of weeks ago and now it is growing again but I intend to clean it out very soon. I like to look at the list of blogs I follow and be able to immediately recognize the person that goes with the blog. Anyway, that was a long winded way to say, I AGREE!!! I'm so glad you addressed this issue. Now, on to the good stuff...so many treasures to look at on this post. I love the book and the "Fresh Cut Tulips" caught my eye immediately because I have been doing a lot of stitching lately. I need to find Dawn's "In My Garden", I would like to see it. Your friendship gifts are so precious. I love the scissor fob from Darlene who I call "Wonder Quilter", lol. And those tins that Shelly sent are so cute, you can't have too many cute tins! I was looking at the thread minder thinking my gosh that is nice then read that her hubby made it! Very nice! I'm so glad all your new dies arrived and I can't wait to hear how they work for you. Enjoy playing with them. Hugs...

Let me know how the wedding ring die is. I thought about getting that one but I didn't. I only follow blogs that I read regularly. And if a blog requires me to be a follower just to be entered in a giveaway, I normally don't bother.

Julie in the Barn said...

Wow, I can see that you will be cutting lots of parts for new quilt tops. I must admit the GO is a great new tool but I'm not on the bandwagon to get one yet. Heck, I'm still awed by the invention of the rotary cutter!

I'm also not on the "follower" bandwagon. The follow gadget didn't work well for me with my slow old dial-up and an ancient computer. Even though I have upgraded recently, I still much prefer to just list all my favorite blogs in my sidebar and check them for new posts as often as possible. So because I'm not a follower, I am not eligible for many giveaways. That's okay by me. I'm not willing to jump through hoops to be entered. I would never put those conditions on my own gifts to other quilters.

Stepping off my soapbox now.

What a load of dies....lucky you!

Enjoyed and agree with your comments about followers...and being a follower.

I agree with you on the follower bit!!! I follow blogs because they inspire me, not to be a number.

Lizzie said...

Had to leave a comment about the following thing. I totally agree with everyone, I refuse to enter a giveaway if I have to jump hoops to do so and I only ever consider entering if I'm already following the blog. If I'm looking at having a giveaway of my own I do it silently now, choose someone from past posts, I find it's much nicer that way and a great surprise for someone too...

I started following your blog because I liked your style of quiltmaking. I felt a connection and I still try to follow blogs that I can make a connection with. I don't want to have a long list of blogs to follow unless they appeal to my style or my interests. I love reading my favorite blogs and look forward to each new post.
Still thinking about starting my own blog, but don't know if I have time.

Oh...I hope you use the double wedding ring die soon...and let us know about it...I'm considering that one!

I have been becoming a follower of all the blogs I read.
Didn't make much sense until, I got,the "Letter" from AccuQuilt. Now I realize comments are great, love them, but these people need to know how much you like reading their blogs, by your becoming a "Follower".

Oh you got some wonderful mail. Don't you just love the mailman. It's funny, I used to hate the mailman because he used to only bring bills. LOL!!! But then I started my blog and doing swaps and making all kinds of wonderful friends. Now I can't wait for the mailman to come. I rush home from work to see if I got a package. It's just too fun.

I love followers. I got a lot of followers during my last giveaway at Sew!Mama!Sew! and a lot of them are now regular commenters on my blog. I know it's kind of dragging people to sign on to follower your blog during a giveaway. But the way I see it, it gives them an extra chance to win, and if they don't want to follow anymore afterwards, then they can stop following. Luckily for me, I have retained most of my followers from giveaways. I work really hard to keep them too, by keeping it a positive, inviting and inspirational blog. That's my ultimate goal. To share with others and inspire them to start quilting, and sewing like me.

I think you do the same. So, don't feel bad if you are helping someone out. You've always been very genereous with your comments and encouragement to others. I love that.

The e-mail of rejection I received offended me. I followed a link from a favorite blog, filled out a form (trying to participate) & have found the result to be negative. I am new to blogging & quilting and the "wording" of the e-mail was definitely not a welcome to either. The Go has been removed from my Christmas wish list. Hey, I have seen absolutely beautiful quilts which were cut using scissors!

I have & will continue to help any blogger going for the magic 100. Thanks for your post. I enjoy reading your blog.

Love all your new dies. Wow, do I want to come play with you at your house!

I agree with you on followers. But, I do enjoy following and having the google/reader tool help show when blogs are updated that I'm following. For that, I value being able to follow a blog I like. But it really isn't a tool to be used, by many that choose to use the follower count to make any decision about a blog.

I went on over and became a follower of Wendy's to help boost her numbers but really I doubt that will do much good. I think the folks at GO will see right through that sort of thing. If you apply with 20 followers one day and then suddenly you have more than 100 in a day or so.....well I don't think they'd be that easily fooled, do you?
It has taken me almost 2 years to get the followers I have (151)I have never asked for followers, every time I see that number go up I know it is because someone has found my blog interesting enough to want to return often. (at least I hope so)and while I LOVE to get comments and hear from my readers I know that there are a great many who lurk in the shadows, they may not speak by leaving a comment but they speak to me by returning over and over again.
I do believe this is the longest comment I have EVER left! LOL
Take care Mary......it is wonderful that you are always so willing to help.

BTW I did submit my blog for consideration, have not heard anything but I'll think good thoughts....Go Cutter = Schnibbles plus more Schnibbles :-)

I love Dawn's new book. I don't do embroidery or cross-stitch any more, but the applique and the whole look of the projects is so appealing. Thanks for sharing the pictures.

I too thought about putting out the call for followers, but on second thought I decided I would earn my followers the old-fashioned way. And no, I don't think Accuquilt will change their mind based on followers, they are looking for big name bloggers who can really advertise their products.

Anyway, have fun with your new toys!

Rachel said...

The funny thing about followers is most people have more than they think!! Many people just look at the blogger listing of followers or a sidebar thingy, but they also have followers in Google or other readers. Like you currently have 654 followers in Google Reader.

I don't begrudge anyone for doing the followers giveaway, I see it more as a way for them to give a gift to the people that do follow them not just the people who follow giveaways. If it's not a blog I regularly follow, then I don't sign up for the extra ticket in because I figure they mean that for their real followers. If it is a blog I follow, then I am happy to announce it for them. :)

I follow a lot of blogs, I probably have over 500 in my Google Reader. They fall into all sorts of categories, quilting, scrapbooking, photography, food, finance, e-readers, everyday life, etc... I certainly do not read every post, but I do regularly read every post of the 90 quilting blogs I follow. I will unfollow a blog when I get sick of it or there is no inspiration to be had.

I am not a regular commenter though, so since I am commenting here, I wanted to say thanks for the great blog!! :)

Cheers!
Rachel

Well said about followers. Not having a blog myself, I only follow the blogs I truly love. I rarely follow someone just to win a prize. Actually, I often choose not to sign up for a give away if it's not a blog I regularly follow....guess it's just me.

That book looks marvelous!

I am so glad you wrote about followers. I think that being a follower of a blog has completely lost any meaning it had. When I moved to WordPress I was rather glad that the "Followers" thing wasn't available.

As well as perhaps not looking at how many people may have subscribed to a blog through a reader, AccuQuilt isn't taking into account those who have blogs on platforms other than Blogger, I think, when saying they want blogs with 100+ followers.

Janet said...

Now I can't wait for the posts where you get to try out the new dies. Your mailbox has been bursting with goodness, what lovely things you recieved.
I don't want to have an accuquilt so I didn't even know about the followers thing. I've personally never requested them for giveaways nor become one for any other reason than I like to follow the blog, but you're right, it's the comments that are meaningful so well said.

badlandsquilts said...

Lovely new dies, I'll be anxious to hear your feedback.

I have mixed feelings about the follower thing, I have found many great blogs from looking at the blogrolls of blogs I follow or if someone I follow refers me to another blog having a giveaway. But I generally only follow a blog that looks interesting or I would want to keep following regardless of the giveaway. And the most interesting, is to check out the blogs of those that follow you...it can be very inspiring and humbling.

QuiltSue said...

Hmm, seems like Accuquilt have stirred up a hornets nest with their 100 followers rule. Personally I think it's a shame, as do most of the other commenters (commentators?) here and that they have devalued the follower thing, which I used to take as a compliment when someone chose to follow me.

You're going to spend so much time playing with your new dies, will you have time to actually make the quilts?

As for your mailbox and it's fun contents, well, you deserve it for all the encouragement and inspiration you give others.

I agree regarding to followers. The number of followers doesn't mean anything, if you never hear from them. I don't mean that a follower have to comment on every post, but now and then .....

Have a great weekend!

Mary after reading your post I too applied to Accuquilt. I haven't received any feedback from them but suspect I don't have a big enough following to qualify. I do have over 100 but just how many more than 100 do they want? Hard to know. I thought about doing a giveaway and trying to gain followers but two things bother me about that....that's kind of like buying friends? and is that kind of cheating just to get a Go! If people don't normally follow me then they shouldn't have to just so I can get a free gift is what finally made me decide against the giveaway with that requirement. I love having followers and I love following blogs....blogs I've grown to love. Occasionally blogger does weird things and I "lose" some of my blogs and have to re-follow - it happened with a dozen or so this week. :( Most of the time I can find them again and it's no problem. Thanks for your comments on this. blessings, marlene

'Cottage Charm' sounds like a great book. I love pretty much all things 'cottagey' :)

And about the followers, it is a tough one. And I agree that I want people to follow me only if they want to. It's a catch 22 with the Accuquilt stuff...and a bit of a bummer. Ah well.

On with blogging! :)

Debi said...

I hope you can show us new quilts made out of those dies! With regards to followers, most of my giveaways are for my followers only, I ask them not to post the giveaway, etc. This last giveaway, I made it an option, not a requirement, because I love blog hopping and wanted new friends. I believe that Accquilt thought they were doing a great marketing thing by asking for blogger friends, but I think this has become a monster! A requirement of followers should never have been an issue.

Stray Stitches said...

What a nice request you made - to become a follower of every blog you visit. I pretty much do that all ready - and, thus, the reason I am currently two days behind on reading all of the ones I follow. Everybody is doing such interesting things and leading such interesting lives it's hard to pass up any of them. Yes, I did request more followers because of the AccuQuilt GO! rejection letter - but I really would love a GO! and currently can't afford to purchase one.

Thank you for sharing the book. I look forward to see all that you create with your new GO! dies!!!!!

When I started my blog last spring I was extremely touched that fellow bloggers 'followed' me. I felt they did it out of friendship and kindness. It's always a pleasure when anybody stops by and leaves a comment, which I always reply to and it's always their choice whether they become a follower or not.

I leave a comment, If I like you, (which I do) I leave a comment...so if I should ever win a GO. I agree with your comment about followers. I read your post about the AccuQuilt and was told I needed 100 followers too. I decided I'd pass rather than beg for people to follow. blogger ate my last comment, grrrr guess he thought I needed to do it over!!
Anyway, I did ask for followers on my very first giveaway as an extra chance, same for a blog posting, since then my giveaways are one comment or I did do one where they had to leave a comment somewhere else but not necessarily follow that person, Now if people want to follow they do if not, not. Like some said there are followers who are lurkers and never hit the folloe button, and now I have some that because of the first request don't read a thing..oh well what's done is done
