My Etsy Rant and My Winner!

Wow, really? This is what I am sitting here thinking. It all started with my consideration of Etsy. I'd never bought anything on Etsy but look often. If I want to purchase an item I must be registered and if after I register I can open my own Etsy shop. Ok, I say to myself! First they want username also same name you want for your shop. Easy enough right? I'm Quilt Hollow. Big red flag the name is TAKEN! What?! Wow?! Really?! The name was taken back in May and has no activity. So I contact the person asking if they weren't using it if I could have it since everyone knows me by the name Quilt Hollow. My reply this morning reads as follows:

I haven't posted anything here yet as I have been selling my quilt fabrics on Ebay.Would you be interested in purchasing the name?Ken

Years ago I worked a quilt shop called, "The Quilted Peach." The same thing happened to the shop owner when she wanted to start her website. She had to buy her name from somebody who took it and wasn't using it.

Well, I won't be buying the name. But what I am asking you to do is even if you don't think you will be starting an Etsy shop or purchasing an item....go register YOUR NAME as the username before yours is also taken.

Scraps that just keep on giving are now being worked into these small little blocks when I occassionally feel like piecing. I've got about 27 made and measuring 3" unfinished.

The winner of the pattern is Sherry! She wrote: You did a beautiful job with this quilt. Would love to do one also. Please send me your snail mail and I'll get this out to you pronto!

Last week I received a very stuffed envelope of fabrics from a win at Randi's blog. Thank you!!

Bummer about the Etsy name thing. Can you use Quilt Hollow II or some other version for a name? Wonder how much this nice person would sell you the name for.

Thanks for the heads up, I've been toying with the idea of opening a shop. It never ceases to amaze me how some people can be, sorry about your shop name

Seriously? Well, that stinks. How about maryatquilthollow for a name? And poo, poo on not winning again but I'll keep trying. Congrats to Sherry.

What a Bozo this guy is! I would use 'The Original Quilt Hollow'! I would also report htis Guy! He has no right to sell the name. BTW I love those little blocks!

What a shame! Could you change the spelling just a tad? It would be interesting to know how much he wanted for it.

I love the little pieced squares. I keep my basket of scraps close, hoping for some inspiration. This may just be it.

Mary at Quilt Hollow works for me too, Mary. I think a lot of people do this thinking they can make a quick buck by selling the name.

Offer Ken $5 and see what he says.

I just love those scrappy blocks. I just know they'll be worked into something devine.

Love the blocks to pieces! ;)

Am duly registered now on Etsy, thanks for the tip!

sorry about you etsy name, could you be Quilt Hollow Store, Place, Cottage, I am sure people who know you would find you especially if you have it posted with a link on your blog.
BTW, I am drooling over your scraps! You know Melody is right, he cannot sell the name!!!

Well, what a nasty person!! Pooh on him.

Happy Cottage Quilter said...

Funny that this guy only has had the name for a short time. Hummmm...... I like Quilt Hollow Place like Jane suggested. It's still you but it is where you are :-)

Cindy said...

Okay, I have to admit - this is the FIRST time I've ever heard of someone actually trying to see "the name".
I guess I shouldn't be surprized - stranger things have happened.

Cindy said...

As you probably know - I meant to say "SELL" the name.

Catherine said...

That's sad about the name -- particularly considering the other person isn't using it! That said, there are people who make a living out of registering names so they can sell them to people who really want them. I wouldn't give him a cent!

Thanks for giving that information....and your win was awesome....Congrats to Sharri

Congrats to Sherry for winning the pattern. How irritating to have that happen with the name. I'd keep trying and put #'s after it....Quilt Hollow1....Quilt Hollow2, etc....and see if you can get the name THAT way! (or else you could try "The REAL Quilt Hollow" and see how Ken likes THAT!!! LOL)

Thanks for the tip - I've toyed with the idea of an Etsy shop for sometime just never got off the porch. At least now I have a name *s*

Thanks for the Heads Up...what a poop he is! Love those little blocks.

The dirty scoundral. I like Mary @ Quilt Hollow and also The Original Quilt Hollow. My daughter did the same thing. She sold her store but kept her name, now the woman who bought her sign opened a store with that name in the next town.

Well gee, I think you bring up a great point about getting your name and all but what name? LeeHaven? Cosmicvibe? Karendianne? ...or something more trippy because I'm like that? It's hard to know. What would I sell?

Okay, can I just jump in right here and say "I luvvvvv those blocks" you're piecing. OMG I totally love them. The more the merrier. Yummy.

...and congrats to your winner, too!

I did that awhile ago and unfortunately my full blog title is too long so I had to go with just appalachianquilter. I agree it's a bummer, especially since you already have business up and running around your longarm work. Maybe just The Quilt Hollow. Love your little blocks.

Julia said...

Oh, I think that was a bit cheeky!
It's a shame, never mind we will always think of your shop as Quilt Hollow...there has to be some way around it, that you could still use it somehow!

Love the blocks, made from scraps huh, cool. That's great about you getting an Etsy shop. Too bad the your Quilt Hollow name was taken. I agree with Karen, can you come up with a version of Quilt Hollow, maybe Quilting Hollow, just a thought. Your fabric winnings are so nice, lucky you.

The Quilt Buddy said...

This really upsets me that people would try to scam $ out of you! Thanks for giving us the heads up on this and try me I will boycot that person!

Gosh I have been w/you from the beginning so to me you ARE the "Original Quilt Hollow"!

XOXO!

Dandelion Quilts said...

What a story! Perhaps you could call yourself The Quilted Hollow.

your friend at The Quilt Buddy has the name for you--put it under--Original Quilt Hollow--works for me--hope it all works out for you--have a great day--hugs, just, Di

Karen said...

How about that. Did he tell you how much he would sell the name for?

randi said...

What a dork! I can't believe he wants you to buy it!

How about the quilt hollow shop. or quilt shop in the hollow.

QuiltSue said...

What a nerve that guy has. I bet he trawls around blogs looking for names and registering them so he can try and sell them on.

I love the look of your little blocks and look forward to seeing what they become when they grow up.

Magnolia Bay Quilts said...

Thanks so much for the Etsy tip. I can't believe he wouldn't offer the name to you and use another since he hasn't even posted anything.

Congratulations on your win at Randi's, and congratulations to Sherry as well.

I'm in love with those little scrap blocks! They're adorable! Can't wait to see them put together.

Karen said...

Etsy thoughts: Some people will try to make money off anything! Sooo not fair!!
I love what you are doing with "Just Scraps".
Congrats to Sherry and to you on your Randi winnings

Kind of terrible that you have to buy your own name. I have heard that a lot of the big, big company names also had to buy their URL, for big bucks!!

It just amazes me how we can find so such interesting people thru the world of blogs. I found you thru the Painted Quilt site and really, really like what you're doing. So much creativity!

I love your little scrap blocks!
Sorry about the Etsy thing and thanks for the heads up....guess it takes all kinds of selfish people to make the world go round these days.
I like "Mary at Quilt Hollow"

Carrie P. said...

Congrats on your win and to the Sherry.
That is very interesting about Etsy.
How rude. Buy the name? Phooey, I know you can come up with a good name.

Candace said...

YOu know, I think that first began happening way back during the dot-com boom, Mary - people were registering domain names right and left so whenever anyone wanted one - they would be sure to make money off of these poor unsuspecting souls! I would have been stomping mad if that happened to me! Did you contact Etsy directly about this? What a scam!
On the ligher side - I love those little blocks!
Cheers!

ooglebloops said...

If you have opened a shop, as I have, is the name then registered? I know there is no one else anywhere with my name - it is on everything I do!

Even if you did "buy" the name from this person, how would you know he or she would deliver it? (cxl their shop) Then how long would it take for it to become available through etsy. There's plenty of people who are in the same boat though as you. I've always wanted to be Katie's Quilts and Crafts. So, that's the title (banner) of my etsy shop. The name.. KumquatMae is my shop's actual name. I hardly use it though. Everything's probably expired by now. = ) But I'm sure you'll think of an incredibly CUTE'R' name that that bum.
